Yiqi's particular interest aims at human-computer interaction in smart environments for cognitive augmentation, within either physical or digital experiences. She believes that the revolution of living is through spatial computing that consider the daily human experience in transforming critical issues from the real world into user-centered design solutions. In the end, these design solutions will blur the boundary of human, machine and the built environment.

Yiqi Zhao spent her Master of Design Tech time at Harvard & MIT Media Lab/EECS, traces of her spatial computing research could also be found at Leica, Columbia University, Bose, the State Department, various AEC corp offices, XR startups.

TANGIBLE [HAREDWARE]
Works related to how wearable tech, digital media, tangible interface can depict, disrupt, transform, or improve perception or the physical environment.

Hardware like ARVR eyewear is the vital medium for the next level of enhanced experience. Yiqi believes that adopting affordable, familiar interface as an additive XR layer toward everyday activities is the direction. For example, free off the ordinary shopping experience, e-learning, work collaboration.

Issues discussed here are bond to cognitive enhancement and psychology under human-centered research, especially through machine vision, responsive audio and communication.

TECHNOLOGY [TOOL]
XR technology stack structure could be divided into four layers:
1. end ARVR apps
2. developer toolkit (ARfoundation, customized interaction toolkit etc)
3. XR plugin framework (tracking, mesh/plane, environment, camera, display, input etc)
4. development engine and XR sdk (unity, unreal etc)
5. provider implementation (plug-in of ARcore/ARkit, Oculus XR, Magic Leap, Windows, OpenXR, other third parties)

Overarching direction for XR tools&pipeline development could be always thinking about how and where the new tool is fit into the above layers or construct/transform them.




















DIGITAL [SOFTWARE]
Yiqi believes that spatial computing enabled digital product has its special quality of UX approach. Several key points are, affordance, empathy, and freedom level(of use).

Affordance: it would always be better if the software is cross-platform, require minimum hardware or engineering support.(eg. lightweight webGL/webXR cloud approach, single site for phone, tablet, laptop)
Empathy: vital when it comes to immersive product, as many of the attempts are totally new concepts for ordinary user, it is harder to dig out their thoughts/goals. A close loop approach of dev-conversation-testing could let the user and product grow together and build up complex systems.
Freedom: it would be more dynamic if the product has a hierarchy of usage for consumer, prosumer, and open source dev. Rather than a simple 2C end-app, we could always make things modular, set milestones from small prototype to a complex/AI enabled service, be open and bring-in collaboration opportunities every time.

EXPERIENCE [CONTENT]
Yiqi believes that the experience design within immersive technology has two vital factors, narrative and perception. Narrative is the core content of certain experience, while perception is how effective/efficient our user perceive the narrative.
